The space race is over. It was killed stone dead by the information age in a hostile takeover. After all, who cares about the moon when there’s a sale on at Banana Republic?

The rush to impart information in ever more digestible ways is now the holy grail of modernity. TV, internet, pop-up ads, RSS feeds, mobile updates, they all batter your corneas on a second-by-second basis.

But as any showman knows, it’s not the medium (or even in some cases the message) that matters, but the delivery. So let us introduce Pecha Kucha – the art world’s very own download to your brain.

Deriving its name from the Japanese term for ‘chit chat’, Pecha Kucha’s format is simple: take a vaguely partisan crowd, then add ten willing speakers; give each one a time limit of six minutes and 40 seconds, access to PowerPoint, a maximum of 20 slides, a rough theme and shove them towards a microphone.

It’s fast food for the lecture circuit, julienning a wide range of subjects into entertaining, easily devoured info-snacks for anyone with a passing interest in Beijing’s creative community.

The theme for this month’s edition is ‘fashion’, and while you’re unlikely to find anyone dressed like the Summer Palace, the lectures can be just as unpredictable.

The organisers vet the scripts, but have no control over the delivery, ‘that is the fun part of Pecha Kucha,’ says Sebastian.

The house lights go up, and as one digital slide replaces another, like bullets slipping into a revolver chamber, a steady game of Russian roulette plays out on stage, with each speaker sweating to keep pace with the projections and hold the audience’s attention.

The burden rests upon the ‘act’ to create something entertaining. Any former student knows the perils of lectures: staring, bored, at the benches in front of you etched with the sighs of your forebears, the sharp tang of Colgate still in your mouth as you blearily try to keep your eyes open.

Pecha Kucha is a different story, though. Naturally, the results can be hit and miss as photographers, artists, dilettantes, gurus, architects, designers and writers all throw their hats into the ring and dive off at tangents.

As for Pecha Kucha: the structure might not change – 10 speakers, six minutes and 40 seconds each – but within these restrictions lies the boundless potential for creativity, and, at the very least, you’ll learn something new.

Kehinde Wiley is a leading young American painter, famous for his portraits weaving urban culture, hip-hop, and contemporary design with the classical paintings of the late Renaissance period. UCCA presents his work to China for the first time this March. With a studio in both New York and Beijing, Wiley’s portraits place black and brown urban young men from around the world in poses from famous art historical works of their respective cultures.

This past year, Wiley worked together with Sportlifestyle brand PUMA to gather inspiration from Africa and help celebrate the upcoming World Cup to be held in South Africa. Wiley painted a series of four paintings creating a team united despite political borders: he painted three portraits of Africa’s most decorated football stars, and a fourth entitled “Unity” of the three players posed together.

Commited to the creation and dissemination of Contemporary Culture, the University of Extremadura, Spain, through the Vice-Chancellor of University Extension, and considering the interest in promoting young artists between national and international development of new artistic languages, announces the first edition of LÚMEN_EX 2010, Digital Art Awards.

Since 1992, the University of Extremadura has announced Artistic Creation Awards, through which, has led to the formation of an Art Collection in order to provide the university community and the general public direct acces to the understanding, study and enjoyment of new languages and artistic vanguards.

Being sensitive to the evolution of these languages and techniques and trying to cooperate actively in the construction of the new digital culture, still emerging, the UEx, through the Vice-Chancellor of University Extension, is now entering a new section of its art collection, which previous updates, to promote and convene these first international Digital Art Awards, LÚMEN_EX 2010, directed by José Ramón Alcalá and selected by a prestigious jury.

The Consulate General of Spain in Shanghai and the AECID presented at The Nut a sample of the research and exploration in the limits of the technological tools to create discourse and aesthetics.

The exhibition gathers the works of the artists at the CORE Labs production center, all of them developers of multimedia research lines who share a well-recognized international career as visual artists [Rez, Bruno and Marula]

The exhibition brings together dierent creative methods that go from digital video and visual mapping to interactive art programming and hardware development for its use in audiovisual live.

El Consulado General de España en Shanghai y el AECID presentaron en The Nut una muestra del desarrollo de investigación y exploración en los límites de las herramientas tecnológicas para crear discurso y estética.

La exposición muestra la obra de los artistas del centro de producción CORE Labs, todos ellos desarrolladores de líneas de investigación multimedia y que comparten el perl de tener una reconocida trayectoria internacional como artistas visuales. [Rez, Bruno y Marula]

La muestra recoge diferentes métodos de creación que van desde el video digital y mapping visual a la programación de arte interactivo y el desarrollo de hardware para su uso en el directo audiovisual.
